BMW . How to Shift a Fuller 13-Speed TransmissionThe 13-speed Eaton-Fuller heavy-duty truck transmission is designed to pull heavy loads while conserving fuel via an overdrive gear splitter. Like many other truck transmissions, the Fuller 13 has a splitter valve that allows the driver to place the transmission in "low" for starting off the line, "Dir" (direct) for high-gear (mid-range speeds) and "OD" for overdrive for fuel conservation at highway speeds. While it seems confusing, shifting a 13-speed splitter is simple once you've mastered the shift pattern. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 Start the engine with the transmission in neutral and bring the air pressure to normal, a process that is done automatically as the vehicle idles. 2 Set the splitter valve to low range by pulling the valve switch on the gear shift nob to the rearward Low position. 3 Depress the clutch pedal with your foot and pull the gear shift to the left and down. This far left and rearward position is your Low gear. Note that you only use the Low gear position when your splitter valve switch is in the Low range position as well. 4 Release the clutch pedal gradually while simultaneously depressing the accelerator and until the truck RPM requires the next gear to avoid reaching the RPM red line. 5 Depress the clutch halfway and shift from low position into neutral, releasing the clutch again. Then immediately depress the clutch again and shift upward into first gear, releasing the clutch as the shift movement is complete. This technique is called double-clutching, and it helps to match the speed of the transmission gears with the engine for improved transmission longevity. Again, as the engine RPM rises, depress the clutch pedal halfway, shift down (straight back) into neutral, release the clutch, depress the clutch quickly and pull straight back again to second gear. Release the clutch once the movement is complete. Repeat this double-clutch process while pushing up, to the right and up again into third gear. From there, pull straight back into fourth gear. You're still in low range at this point. 6 Move the splitter valve (selector valve) on the gear shift nob to the "Dir" position, which will engage the high-gear range of the transmission. This is done just prior to your shift from low fourth to the next gear, high fifth. 7 Double-clutch while moving the gear shift forward (neutral) over one slot and up, reaching fifth gear. This is the same position as first gear when you were in Low range. Shift straight back for sixth, up/over/up for seventh, and straight back for eighth gear ensuring that you double-clutch each time. Note that you may place the transmission in "OD" (overdrive) while you're in fifth, sixth, seventh or eighth gear, without use of the clutch, by simply moving the splitter valve from the "Dir" to the "OD" position. You don't have to use "OD." 8 Flip the splitter valve to "Dir," and downshift from your current gear to the next lower gear. As you downshift, ensure that you continue to employ the double-clutch technique. It's important that you memorize the positions of each gear, noting that first gear is found in the same position as fifth gear, second as sixth, third as seventh and fourth as eighth. Split-shift rear-axle gear systems were designed for vehicles that require a great deal of torque to carry heavy loads and that is why they are popular in dump trucks and semi-tractors. Split shift systems are popular because the large number of gears prevent the truck from lurching every time you shift carrying a heavy load. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Step by Step : 1 Put both transmission boxes in "Neutral." Fire-up the vehicle and put your foot on the brake. Release the air brakes. Engage the clutch and put the primary transmission box in first gear. Put the auxiliary transmission box in first gear as well. 2 Release the clutch slowly and allow the gears to engage. Moving forward, place your foot on the accelerator and bring your tachometer's revolutions per minute up to a suitable shifting speed. Push the clutch to the floor, release it, and push it to the floor again. Move the auxiliary gear stick into second gear and release the clutch. You are now in second on your auxiliary, but your primary gear box is still in first. Follow this process through your remaining two auxiliary gears, third and fourth. 3 Raise your rpm to a suitable shifting speed and double-pump the clutch, holding it down on the second pump. Put your auxiliary box in "Neutral" and shift your primary transmission box into second gear. Slide the auxiliary box into first gear and release the clutch. You just performed the act of split shifting. 4 Shift through the gears of your auxiliary box until you reach fourth gear, then clutch the transmissions, neutralize your axillary box and move the primary transmission box into third. Move through the gears of your auxiliary box until you reach fourth gear then neutralize your auxiliary box and move the primary into fourth and begin moving through your auxiliary box again. You just successfully ran through the gears of a split shifter. This involves getting into the proper gearto reduce the strain on the engine and the transmission, and not riding your clutch. A good driver with a manual transmission learns to watch the tachometer, or just "feel" the car's need for more power or more speed, and shift into the proper gear for each occasion. But many drivers with automatic transmissions just shift into Drive and go up steep hills, carry heavy loads, and bounce into jackrabbit starts, happily oblivious to the fact that even automatic transmissions have gear selectors that provide one or two lower gears for these occasions. An automatic transmission works with gears, too. If you're in low gear, you're transmitting more power to your rear wheels, and your transmission feels the strain. If you attempt to speed in a low gear, you strain the transmission even more. On the other hand, if you attempt to climb hills in high gear, you force the car to make the effort in a gear that lacks the power for the job. The result: more strain. To avoid unnecessary wear and tear and extend the life of your transmission, whether it's manual or automatic, use the following shifting strategies: *** When you need a sudden burst of speed, use passing gear. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, passing gear provides the same kind of increased power that downshifting a manual transmission does. You use passing gear when you're already in high gear and need an extra burst of power to pass a car or enter a freeway. If you've been traveling at less than 50 mph, the sudden flooring of the accelerator makes your car downshift automatically from High to Second, which provides more power by speeding up the engine. When you release the pedal, the car goes back to High. Use Overdrive (or Fifth gear on a manual transmission), if you have it, when you're travelling along steadily at a high speed. With Overdrive or Fifth, you have an extra, higher gear that allows your rear wheels to turn even faster while maintaining the same engine speed. After you're really moving, shifting into Overdrive means that you can move at the same speed while the engine turns more slowly and consumes less fuel. Shift to higher gears as soon as your speed enters their range. (Your owner's manual should tell you the range of speed for each gear.) There's no need to supply extra power when it's not needed. However, if traffic slows and you feel the engine straining (called lugging), downshift to allow the lower gears to provide more power. When the engine is lugging, shift into a lower gear so that it can turn faster and carry you along with less strain. After you get everything moving freely, return to a higher gear. Use lower gears for heavy loads and steep hills. If you come to a steep hill — or if you're carrying four kids, two dogs, and everything you'll need for a month in the country — go for the lower gears instead of trying to haul the whole mess as fast as you can. Then shift back up again to coast down the hill. This way, the power goes toward carrying the load ratherthan toward maintaining speed.
